Skin Cancer

Prescott ‑ Prescott Valley ‑ Cottonwood ‑ Scottsdale

Skin cancer is a malignancy. Symptoms may be diffuse redness, bleeding, rapid growth, or a pearl-colored nodule. Skin cancer is almost always related to sun exposure but heredity is also a factor.
The most common types of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). These lesions do not normally spread but should be treated as early as possible to decrease local tissue problems. Shave biopsy or punch biopsy are two ways to diagnose skin cancer. The tissue sample is microscopically examined by a pathologist for the specific diagnosis. The diagnosis will determine the treatment. Some superficial types of skin cancer may be treated with liquid nitrogen or electrodessication.

Mohs Surgery is used to ensure complete removal of skin cancer in the head and neck area. Effudex (5-FU) or Aldara (Imiquimod) are also used to treat skin cancer without surgery.
