Actinic Keratosis

Prescott ‑ Prescott Valley ‑ Cottonwood ‑ Scottsdale

Actinic keratoses are lesions induced by long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays in sunlight. They occur most commonly on the head, neck and upper extremities. Although they present as scaling, thickened plaques they are not dry skin, but damaged skin.

Lubricating lotions may soften them and give the illusion of improvement, but don’t treat them. Some actinic keratoses, not all, may progress to a skin cancer of the non-melanoma type and therefore should be evaluated and treated as appropriate.
